On December 28, the PBS NOVA show, Secrets Beneath the Ice, will feature almost a minute of ICE PEOPLE footage. I decided to seize this occasion to revamp www.icepeople.com. The website is still a work in progress, but I hope you’ll agree that it’s on its way to looking gorgeous.
We’ve also made some headway and are making DVD’s of ICE PEOPLE available on AMAZON and NETFLIX. We’re working to get the film streaming on I-TUNES, Netflix and Amazon VOD.

The work in Antarctica continues, albeit without the film crew… A couple of weeks ago, on a rainy and grim Sunday afternoon in New York, I got a call from Allan Ashworth and Adam Lewis. They were calling on a satellite phone from the Friis Hills, the remote plateau above the Dry Valleys of Antarctica where they had set up camp with three students for the research season less than a mile from where we had filmed the iconic image (see above) of ICE PEOPLE in 2006. I was instantly propelled four years back. I knew exactly where they were and what they were seeing (a wide expanse of ice, rock and sky) and feeling (mainly cold). I posted a nostalgic status update on facebook, something I do very rarely. Within five minutes, the film’s sound recordist, Richard Fleming, expressed sheer jealousy. I spent the rest of the afternoon in a daydream. This is what going to the Ice will do to you.

MY NEIGHBOR MY KILLER is still going strong. I’ve produced a DVD of the film in France for home use, which is available for purchase from the Mémorial de la Shoah in Paris and from the Centre Leclerc in Blois and in Vence.
I chose these three sales outlets because the film was screened in October at the Mémorial de la Shoah, at the Rendez-vous de l’Histoire de Blois and in Vence at the invitation of the vibrant Association Cultures et Cinéma. They had seen the film in Cannes a couple of years ago, and after trying for some time to schedule a visit, it was very rewarding to finally meet everyone there.
The French DVD’s, which include a booklet with introductions by noted historian Jean-Noël Jeanneney, Pierre Vincke from RCN Justice & Democracy and Assumpta Mugiraneza with whom I work in Rwanda, should be available for sale off my website as soon as it’s re-designed (yes, we’re re-vamping www.anneaghionfilms.com and www.gacacafilms.com as well).
In addition to the French screenings over the last several months, I was invited along with the film to a number of other venues.
First, there was Mozambique, for the 5th edition of Pedro Pimenta’s DOCKANEMA which took place just a few days after the end of the September riots in Maputo. The reception for the film at the French Cultural Center was terrific.
In October, I took part in a two-day seminar at the University of London’s School of Advanced Studies. Organized by Lars Waldorf, this seminar was the last of the year-long Sawyer Seminar Series on Fratricide and Fraternité, sponsored by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. After London, I headed over to the University of York, where Lars teaches at the Center for Applied Human Rights, and I participated in a one-day workshop called “Moving from Transitional to Transformative Justice.”
Lastly, I went to Iran, where the team at the 4th edition of the Cinéma Vérité Documentary Film Festival couldn’t have been more gracious. Even though the trip was short, and I didn’t get to see much (I did make it to Ispahan for a day), Iran was fascinating.
Looking ahead to 2011, there are lots of projects in the works. In addition to finishing the re-design of all three websites, in the next few months we will be coming out with a home video DVD of MY NEIGHBOR MY KILLER. Stay tuned for the announcement of a crowd-funding campaign to help get this project going.
Also in the works for late 2011 is a DVD of the Gacaca Trilogy, and a DVD of ICE PEOPLE with bonus sequences of never-before-seen footage.
We’re also hoping to kick off our screening series of MY NEIGHBOR MY KILLER in Rwanda during the first half of 2011.

Le 28 décembre, l’émission NOVA sur PBS (l’émission scientifique la plus regardée aux Etats Unis) sera consacrée à l’Antarctique et incluera près d’une minute extraite de ICE PEOPLE. J’ai décidé de saisir cette occasion pour refaire le site internet www.icepeople.com . Le travail n’est pas tout à fait terminé, mais j’espère que le nouveau site vous plaira.
Le film est toujours disponible sur ARTE VOD, en téléchargement et en DVD à la demande.
Et j’avance aussi pour faire en sorte que ICE PEOPLE soit disponible sur AMAZON et en streaming sur I-TUNES.

Tents on the ice in Antartica
Le travail en Antarctique continue, même si c’est sans l’équipe du film… Il y a une quinzaine de jours, par un dimanche après midi gris et froid à New York, le téléphone a sonné et Allan Ashworth et Adam Lewis étaient à l’autre bout du fil. Ils m’appelaient sur leur téléphone satellite des Friis Hills, le plateau au-dessus des Vallées Sèches où ils campaient avec trois étudiants pour la saison. Ils étaient à moins d’un kilomètre de là où nous avons filmé l’image emblématique de ICE PEOPLE en 2006 (voir ci-dessus). J’ai été instantanément transportée quatre ans en arrière. Je savais exactement où ils étaient et ce qu’ils voyaient (la glace, les rochers et le ciel à perte de vue), et ce qu’ils ressentaient (le froid). J’ai posté un mot nostalgique sur Facebook, ce que je fais très rarement. Moins de cinq minutes plus tard, Richard Fleming, l’ingénieur du son du film, a manifesté de la jalousie pure. J’ai passé le reste de la journée à rêver du grand sud. Quand l’Antarctique vous tient…

Les nouvelles de MON VOISIN MON TUEUR sont toujours bonnes. J’ai édité un DVD du film en Français qui est disponible à l’achat au Mémorial de la Shoah, et dans les Centres Leclerc de Blois et de Vence.
J’ai choisi ces trois endroits car le film a été présenté au Mémorial en Octobre, ainsi qu’aux Rendez-vous de l’Histoire de Blois et à Vence à l’invitation de l’Association Cultures et Cinema
. Depuis qu’ils avaient vu le film à Cannes, plusieurs membres de l’association oeuvraient pour me faire venir montrer le film, et c’était formidable de finalement y arriver.
Le DVD en Français, qui inclut des textes d’introduction de Jean-Noël Jeanneney, Pierre Vincke de RCN Justice & Démocratie, et Assumpta Mugiraneza avec qui je travaille au Rwanda, sera très bientôt en vente sur mon site internet, dès qu’il sera re-dessiné (oui, j’ai décidé de refaire www.anneaghionfilms.com et www.gacacafilms.com également).

Enfin, je me suis rendue en Iran, où j’ai été accueillie par l’équipe formidable du 4ème Festival du Film Documentaire Cinéma Vérité. Le voyage a été court, mais j’ai quand même pu passer une journée à Ispahan et entrevoir ce pays fascinant.
Voilà pour 2010. Plein de projets m’attendent en 2011. Outre le re-lancement des trois sites internet, dans les prochains mois je pense éditer un DVD de MON VOISIN MON TUEUR aux Etats Unis. Je vous tiendrai au courant du lancement de la campagne de financemement.
Je travaille aussi à l’édition d’un coffret DVD de la Trilogie des Gacaca, et puis d’un DVD de ICE PEOPLE avec des séquences inédites en bonus.
Enfin, j’espère lancer notre série de projections de MON VOISIN MON TUEUR au Rwanda d’ici le printemps.
