News to Start the Year
Dear friends,
With the New Year, come new ideas and projects, and a flurry of updates.
First with the new:
I have been invited to speak at TEDxESCP in Paris on February 25th. I’m thrilled to share my thoughts on my work as a filmmaker and in particular on my work in Rwanda over the last twelve years. This fall, I had the enormous privilege of spending a month as a fellow at the MacDowell Colony. This was a fabulous opportunity to reflect and gather thoughts and energy for my new projects. It’s still a bit early to say more, but I am working on two projects that both involve trauma and our interaction with landscape.
I had the honor of being featured in the Fall issue of the Revue d’Histoire de la Shoah to talk about my work in Rwanda. Published by the Shoah Memorial in Paris, this issue, which also included a discussion with SHOAH director Claude Lanzmann, was devoted to film and the Holocaust.
I also spent a few weeks in the mountains of Lebanon teaching a documentary film class at the Académie Libanaise des Beaux Arts with ten wonderful students. As always with teaching, it was an extremely rich experience.
Iriba Center is moving forward, spearheaded mainly by my colleague in Rwanda, Assumpta Mugiraneza, who is in full-on strategizing and fundraising mode. Assumpta will be launching a blog soon to share important milestones in the Center’s creation. Here are a few key bits of news though:
We are getting not one but two houses from the French Embassy, and they’re in a superb location in one of Kigali’s student hubs. More than 6,500 high school students will be within less than a one-mile radius from Iriba.
Assumpta has started working with a team of consultants and volunteers in Kigali to create and implement a strategy to identify and gather documents.
Iriba is part of the organizing team of a public conference and film event that will bring academics and filmmakers focusing on Cambodia, Armenia and the Holocaust, to share ideas and films together and with a Rwandan audience. The conference is partly funded by the Fonds d’Alembert and will take place at the Franco-Rwandan Cultural Center.
We’ve sent out most of the rewards to our Kickstarter fundraising campaign supporters, but some of you are still waiting for the NTSC DVD of MY NEIGHBOR MY KILLER and for the DVD Boxset of the Gacaca Trilogy. Coming soon!
The DVD of MY NEIGHBOR MY KILLER will be ready in the next couple of months. It will include interesting introductions contextualizing the film. You can order the French PAL version here (FNAC and AMAZON), and the NTSC English version will soon be available for pre-order. We’ll keep you posted.

Avec 2012 qui commence, voici des idées et projets nouveaux ainsi que le point sur les projets en cours.
D’abord les nouvelles aventures:
J’ai été invitée à participer à la première journée de TEDxESCP à Paris le 25 février. Je me réjouis de partager avec vous la façon dont j’envisage mon travail de cinéaste et, en particulier, ce que j’ai entrepris au Rwanda les douze dernières années. Cet automne, j’ai eu l’immense privilège de passer un mois en résidence d’artiste à la prestigieuse MacDowell Colony. J’y ai réfléchi à mes nouveaux projets et suis de retour avec une énergie renouvelée. Il est encore un peu tôt pour vous en dire plus, mais je travaille sur deux projets qui sont des réflexions sur les traumatismes et le paysage.
Par ailleurs, la Revue d’Histoire de la Shoah publie un entretien autour de mon travail au Rwanda dans son dernier numéro. Publié par le Mémorial de la Shoah, ce numéro, qui s’intitule “Les Ecrans de la Shoah”, inclut également un entretien avec Claude Lanzmann.
J’ai aussi passé quelques semaines dans les montagnes du Liban pour donner un cours de cinéma documentaire à une dizaine d’étudiants formidables de l’Académie libanaise des Beaux Arts. Comme toujours avec ce genre d’expérience, ça a été un moment très riche.
Les choses avancent avec le Centre Iriba. Assumpta Mugiraneza, ma collègue au Rwanda, travaille d’arrache-pied pour rechercher des fonds et mettre en place notre stratégie. Vous pouvez en apprendre plus sur www.iribacenter.org. Assumpta va démarrer un blog très bientôt pour vous raconter les tribulations de la création du Centre. En attendant, voici quelques nouvelles importantes:
Nous allons obtenir non pas une mais deux maisons de l’Ambassade de France, superbement situées dans un quartier d’écoles. Plus de 6 500 écoliers et lycéens seront à moins d’un kilomètre d’Iriba.
Assumpta a commencé à travailler avec une équipe de consultants et de bénévoles à Kigali afin de créer et de mettre en oeuvre une politique d’identification et d’acquisition d’archives.
Iriba fait partie d’une équipe qui coordonne un cycle de films et une conférence qui regroupera des chercheurs et des réalisateurs travaillant sur le Cambodge, l’Arménie et la Shoah afin de partager des images et des idées avec un public rwandais. Cet évènement sera partiellement financé par le Fonds d’Alembert et aura lieu au Centre Culturel Franco-Rwandais.
Nous avons envoyé la plus grande partie des récompenses à nos soutiens sur Kickstarter, mais certains d’entre vous attendent toujours la version NTSC du DVD de MY NEIGHBOR MY KILLER et le coffret de la Trilogie des Gacaca. On ne vous oublie pas!
Le DVD de MY NEIGHBOR MY KILLER avec des textes d’introduction en anglais sera prêt d’ici la fin mars. D’ici là, la version française en PAL est disponible ici (FNAC et AMAZON) et vous pourrez très bientôt commander la version anglaise en NTSC. Nous vous tiendrons au courant.
Nous aurons sans doute bientôt du nouveau avec ICE PEOPLE. En attendant, le film est disponible en streaming ici (ARTE VOD, Objective Cinema et Itunes France) et en DVD à la demande ici (ARTE VOD).
